Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler says the Padres may host the Holiday Bowl and the Poinsettia Bowl if Qualcomm Stadium is demolished or condemned before a new college football/MLS stadium can be built in Mission Valley.
While the Petco Park lease prohibits the use of the ballpark for football, Fowler believes that it could be changed.
Padres willing to help keep college football
"As it relates to San Diego State, we’re probably the last option,” Fowler said. “… I think downtown might be a better option for the Holiday Bowl.”
In 2012, Petco Park was considered as a location for CIF Football, but it was determined it was not safe since there was not enough space beyond the end-zones.
The Padres are now working with their architectural firm to see if they can reconfigure seats to make a football field fit.
It’s times like these that I wish the city had made an investment in a shared use facility or a sports complex downtown instead of stand alone facilities. That’s why I think that this Mission Valley plan may be just want the county needs.
