The Padres can clinch the series this evening while playing spoiler to the visiting Red Sox, who are trying to get closer to securing a coveted Wild Card playoff spot.

On the mound for San Diego and looking to rebound from a rough start his last time out will be Paul Clemens. He hasn’t had much luck as a starter for the Padres; since joining the team, he’s 1-4 with a 4.54 ERA. But his most recent outing was arguably his worst of the season. Even though he only allowed two runs against the Braves, he only lasted three innings while racking up 82 pitches.

Clemens has made one appearance against the Red Sox in his career. He threw three innings in a relief outing during his rookie season in 2013, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four.

Boston will send Clay Buchholz to the mound for the start tonight. The right-hander has bounced back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen this season, and is coming back as a starter now due to a shoulder injury for Steven Wright. Altogether this season, he’s 5-10 with a 5.20 ERA. This will be the veteran’s first career appearance against San Diego.
