The Padres are back home after an 11-day (ten-game) road trip that ended with a series loss against the Dodgers. On this Labor Day afternoon, they’ll kick off their homestand with the series opener against the Red Sox. While Edwin Jackson takes the mound for the Friars, old friend Drew Pomeranz will get the ball for the visiting Sox.

After going 3-1 with a 3.62 ERA over his first five San Diego starts, Jackson has been hit hard in his more recent attempts. He’s lost each of his last three starts, giving up a combined 18 runs while only throwing a total of 11 2/3 innings in that stretch. The 32-year-old veteran righty has faced the Red Sox 12 times in his career, with 11 of those being starts. He has a 2-4 record and 5.13 ERA against them.

Pomeranz will be making his first return to Petco Park since he was traded in July. The former Padres All-Star went 8-7 with a 2.76 ERA before the trade. He struggled immediately after leaving San Diego, but has bounced back over the past month. Unfortunately for the southpaw, he hasn’t had much success against the Padres in his career. He has seven appearances (four starts) against them all-time, but has an 0-4 record and 8.10 ERA in those outings.
