Game three of the four-game set between the Padres and Giants takes place tonight. After evening up the series with a 7-2 victory last night, San Diego will try to make it two in a row this evening.

Jarred Cosart gets the start for the Friars, coming off his worst outing of the year. He struggled with his command and couldn’t make it out of the fourth inning against Colorado on Sunday, giving up five runs on five hits and four walks through only 3 2/3 innings of work.

Cosart hasn’t made it to five innings all month. He also failed to reach the 5th in both of his previous career starts against the Giants. He’s 0-2 in those appearances, allowing a combined ten runs on 14 hits and nine walks through a total of 8 1/3 innings.

Pitching for San Francisco will be Madison Bumgarner, who’s coming off a scoreless seven-inning appearance against the Dodgers that ended in a benches-clearing confrontation. But prior to exiting the game, Bumgarner had collected ten strikeouts while giving up only one hit and walking no one.

One start before that, the Padres got to Bumgarner for three runs on seven hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings of work, resulting in a loss for the Giants lefty. He also lost to them back in July after allowing four runs through seven innings. On the other hand, he won two starts against them in the first half of the season combining for 15 2/3 innings of three-run ball and collecting 20 strikeouts. Career-wise, Bumgarner is 10-7 in 27 outings (26 starts) with a 3.27 ERA.
