The Padres couldn’t complete their sweep of the Diamondbacks last night, but their next opponent is one they’ve had no trouble sweeping recently. The Giants come to Petco Park for a four-game set looking to get closer to securing a coveted NL West Wild Card spot. San Diego lost its first nine games against San Francisco this season, but they’ve swept the last two series between them, the most recent of which took place just last week.
Today’s Padres starter, Christian Friedrich, didn’t pitch in that last series, nor in any of the other series against the Giants in 2016, his first season with San Diego. Before this year, he made 11 appearances (only one start) against SF. Through a combined 16 1/3 innings in those appearances, he only gave up a total of two runs on nine hits and a walk.
This year has been the most work-heavy of Friedrich’s four-year career. He’s 5-8 with a a 6.17 ERA in 16 starts, totaling 116 2/3 innings of work going into tonight’s start. The southpaw is coming off a rough outing in Colorado, where he gave up four runs in five innings against the Rockies. But his most recent start at Petco Park, which was also against the Rockies, saw him throw seven shutout innings and allow only two hits and a walk while collecting a career high-tying ten strikeouts.
Giants starter Jeff Samardzija came out on the losing end against the Padres during last week’s series at AT&T Park. He threw six frames and gave up four runs on eight hits and a walk. But he pitched much better his next time out in his most recent outing, keeping the Cardinals to only one run on five hits through 6 1/3 innings. Career-wise, Samardzija in 6-2 with a 3.56 ERA in 11 appearances (nine starts) against the Padres.
