The Padres are back on the West Coast this evening, just up the freeway from home. They’ll begin a weekend series against the Dodgers tonight, behind a starting pitcher who has plenty of experience against the NL West rivals.

CLayton Richard gets the start for San Diego in tonight’s opener. In his career, he’s faced Los Angeles 18 times (16 times as a starter) - more than any other team. Through those 18 appearances he’s posted a 3.84 ERA and 1.352 WHIP while going 6-4. But he had some trouble in a relief appearance against them earlier this season, when he was still with the Cubs. He gave up two earned runs on three hits without recording any outs.

Richard is coming off his best performance of the year, by far. He earned his first win since rejoining the Padres in August by pitching a seven-inning shutout on the road against the Marlins.

Dodgers rookie Julio Arias will try to keep Richard from his second straight win tonight. After going 0-2 through his first six Major League outings, Arias has won each of his last five decisions, including his last four consecutive appearances. Tonight will be his first time facing San Diego.
