The Padres opened up their series in San Francisco with a win behind a solid outing from starter Paul Clemens. Clayton Richard will go for the same tonight in game 2 as San Diego tries to lock up the series win.
In 15 career starts against the Giants, Richard has a 6-5 record with a 3.87 ERA, which he’ll try to improve on tonight. In his short time in the Padres rotation so far, Richard has been incredibly effective. He’s coming off the best outing of his season, a win against the Rockies. He went seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits and walking two while striking out eight. It was the second scoreless outing he put up in his five starts for the 2016 Padres. As a starter he’s allowed only five runs (three earned) while putting together 30 innings of work.
Pitching opposite Richard will be rookie Albert Suarez, who hopes to help San Francisco better their playoff chances. Suarez will be making his 20th Major League appearance (10th start) as he faces the Padres for just the second time. He threw in relief against them in July and kept them scoreless with only two hits in 1 2/3 innings, though he also walked three in the process.
