Padres Preview: 09-01 Jarred Cosart gets the ball in finale against Braves

MLB: San Diego Padres at Miami Marlins Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Padres wrap up their series in Atlanta today, looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Braves.

Jarred Cosart makes the start for San Diego. He’s been solid since joining the Padres at the beginning of August, allowing multiple earned runs in a start only once in five tries. Today will be his fifth career start against the Braves, and he’ll try to continue his past success. In his four previous starts against them, he is 3-0 with a 2.63 ERA.

Pitching opposite Cosart will be Mike Foltynewicz, who faces the Padres for only the second time in his career. His first attempt, in June of 2015, didn’t go so well; he went 5 2/3 innings, allowing five erned runs on 12 hits.

Foltynewicz has been decent for the Braves this season, coming into today’s matchup with a 7-5 record and 4.30 ERA. He’s coming off one of the best starts of his career, a 7 2/3-inning performance at AT&T Park, where he kept the Giants to one run on five hits and a walk while striking out six.
