Paul Clemens will look to improve against the Phillies and out-duel a pitcher making his MLB debut,

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

With a loss last night after coming up short in the final outs, the Padres will try to take a win in the second game of the series against a rookie pitcher making his MLB debut.

Jake Thompson is the Phillies top pitching prospect making his first MLB start in this game. He's rated as the 70th top prospect in MLB and was acquired by Philadelphia in the Cole Hamels trade last year. His numbers have been very good in AAA, going 11-5 with a 2.50 ERA with the IronPigs. His ERA is actually a smidge better over his last 11 starts, coming in at a 1.21.

Paul Clemens will take the mound for the Padres and is doing his level best to make an impression while in the starting rotation. Overall, Paul is 0-2 with a 3.46 ERA. Paul's current issue is giving up the longball rather prolifically; in his last start on Sunday, Paul coughed up his third home run in 13 innings pitched. Strangely enough, all 5 of the runs given up by Clemens have come off home runs. We'll see if Clemens can be less James Shields against a young (2nd youngest roster in MLB) Phillies team putting a rookie pitcher on the mound. The Padres should look to take advantage of a rookie pitcher and get some offense going.

Ken Caminiti will be honored at tonight's game scheduled at 5:40 Left Coast Time.
