SD 1, ATL 8: Friars drop second game to the Braves

This is just about the worst kind of game to watch in August.

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Nearing the end of August and struggling to break the 60-win threshold, Padres fans are trying to find the little gems of what to watch during an 8-1 stomp by a team who only just now won their 50th game of the season. For the Padres, the collective pitching wasn't very fun to watch today, and neither was the hitting. But there was a gem or two, trust me.

Paul Clemens had the start today, and . In the bottom of the first Clemens balked with Matt Kemp up to bat, and straight up balked in the run. He finished his start with an 82 pitch count, and other than his balk, only allowed an RBI double. In the 6th inning, Kevin Quackenbush gave up a 2-run RBI double and a 2-run RBI single. Jose Dominguez set him up for that, so they shared 2 earned runs a piece. Brandon Maurer also gave up 2 runs in the 8th, making it 8-1.

That 1 Padre run was one of those gems I was talking about. Yet another home run by Oswaldo Arcia.

That was the only run to cross the plate that 10 Friars were K'd at. The other sweet little teeny tiny gem was Dominguez inducing a bases-loaded double play, and maybe Derek Norris catching Ender Inciarte trying to be clever on a wild pitch. The last sighs of relief of the night for Padres fans.
