These seven Padres prospects will play in the 2016 Arizona Fall League

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Today the Padres announced which of their prospects will be taking part in the Arizona Fall League this year. For those not in the know about such things, the AFL is a six-team league under the aegis of Major League Baseball in which each club sends a half-dozen or so prospects for further seasoning. The Padres' affiliate, shared of course with four other MLB clubs, is the Peoria Javelinas, who play their home games in the Padres' spring training home. This year San Diego will be sending seven players, listed below in alphabetical order with their positions and the teams they have played for in 2016.

Franchy Cordero, CF - Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A), San Antonio Missions (AA)

Michael Gettys, CF - Fort Wayne TinCaps (A), Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A)

Jason Jester, RP - San Antonio Missions (AA), El Paso Chihuahuas (AAA)

Phil Maton, RP - Fort Wayne TinCaps (A), Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A), El Paso Chihuahuas (AAA)

Kyle McGrath, RP - Fort Wayne TinCaps (A), Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A)

Josh VanMeter, 3B - Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A), San Antonio Missions (AA)

Brad Wieck, RP - Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A), San Antonio Missions (AA)

Opening Day for the 30-game AFL season is October 11, with the championship game scheduled for November 19. Hopefully some of the players listed above will perform well enough to be chosen for the annual Fall Stars Game, which will be played on November 5.
