The Padres and Cubs conclude their three-game set at Petco Park this afternoon. San Diego will try to stave off a sweep at the hands of their visitors, sending Paul Clemens to the mound to battle with Kyle Hendricks.

Clemens has just five Padres starts (plus four relief appearances) under his belt since joining the team in July. In those five starts, as well as his two starts for the Marlins earlier this year, he’s struggled to go deep into the game, pitching no more than five frames each time. He is 2-2 in those seven starts, and one of his wins came against these Cubs, back when he pitched for Miami. However, he gave up four runs on four hits (including two home runs) and walked five batters in that outing.

Hendricks pitched well in his start against the Padres earlier this year, but didn’t get a decision. Through 6 2/3 innings, he kept them to three runs (two earned) on six hits while only walking one and striking out eight. That was his fourth career appearance against San Diego, and he pitched even better in the previous three. Overall he is 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA in those four starts, combining for 28 2/3 innings against the Padres.
