The Padres couldn’t get it done in their series opener against the Cubs, but they’ll try to even things up tonight behind Christian Friedrich.
After going 0-7 through his last nine starts, Friedrich will go for the win in his first career start against Chicago. His last time out he kept the Rays to two runs on five hits through 6 2/3 innings of work. That was his fourth straight start that lasted six innings or more, a stretch during which he posted a 3.86 ERA.
Arrieta is looking to improve on an already great season. Going into tonight’s matchup, he’s 15-5 with a 2.75 ERA through his first 24 starts. He’s coming off a rough outing, however - a 5 2/3-inning performance against the Brewers, to whom he allowed five runs on three hits and a season-high seven walks.
Tonight will be Arrieta’s first time facing the Padres this year, but third time overall. Through his first two career starts against San Diego, he went 1-1 and allowed seven runs (six earned) through a combined nine innings of work.
