The Padres handed the Mets their fourth straight loss last night in the opener of a three-game set at Citi Field. Today they’ll try to stay in the win column and clinch the series.

Jarred Cosart gets the ball for San Diego in game 2. It will be his third start since joining the team at the end of July. In his Padres debut on August 1st, he only went 3 2/3 innings and allowed no runs and only one hit, but he walked six batters and hit one. His most recent outing saw him go five innings on the mound while walking no one, but he gave up five earned runs on 10 hits.

Cosart has already faced the Mets this season. His 2016 debut for the Marlins was against this team. He allowed three runs on four hits and three walks through 4 2/3 innings of work. That was his fifth career start against New York. He has yet to factor into any decisions against them, posting a 3.45 ERA through a combined 28 2/3 frames in those five starts.

Mets starter Jacob deGrom is making just his third career start against San Diego. He went 1-1 in his first two, keeping the Padres to three runs on ten hits through a total of 13 innings. The right-hander has been having a decent season, going 7-5 through his first 20 outings with a 2.35 ERA to show for it. He’s been especially effective since the All-Star Break in July. In five starts since then he’s posted a 1.62 ERA while going 2-1. That includes a one-hit complete-game shutout against the Phillies on July 17th.
