Padres Preview: 08⁄12 Paul Clemens returns to the mound in opener against Mets

After being taken out early in his last start, Clemens is back in action tonight at Citi Field.

The Padres couldn’t come up with the win in their finale at PNC Park, dropping the series to the Pirates. Tonight they’ll kick off weekend series at Citi Field in New York. Paul Clemens gets the start for the Friars in the opener, opposite Logan Verrett for the Mets.

The last time Clemens took the mound, his outing was cut short due to what Padres manager Andy Green perceived as a lack of hustle and big no-no. After failing to run out a failed bunt attempt, Green benched Clemens and went to the bullpen early. After that little punishment, it’s probably safe to assume Clemens will be going all out, not only on the mound but at the plate, from here forward. And tonight he’ll also be looking to notch his first win since joining the Padres from Miami last month.

Through his first nine appearances (three starts) as a Friar, Clemens is 0-2 with a 4.61 ERA. He has yet to pitch more than five innings in a game this season, but hopefully he can go deeper against this Mets team.

A few days ago the Mets were hoping to take advantage of a six-game stretch against two weak NL West teams and try to improve on their Wild Card chances. But so far luck hasn’t been on their side. Yesterday they were unable to salvage a win and the Diamondbacks swept them, putting their record at 57-57 on the season.

Verrett will try to get them back over that .500 mark as he makes his 11th start (and 39th overall appearance) of the year. To this point, he is 3-7 with a 4.66 ERA. Tonight will be just his second time ever facing the Padres. Earlier this season he threw two innings in relief against them, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits, including a homer. He also struck out three in that appearance.
