Once again the Padres find themselves trying to seal a series win in the finale of a three-game set. They failed to do so in their last attempt, against the Phillies, but hopefully they’ll have more success today at PNC Park. The early game will feature a lefty-righty matchup between San Diego’s Christian Friedrich and Pittsburgh’s Jameson Taillon.

Friedrich is coming off a season-high-tying seven-inning performance against the Phillies. But it wasn’t the greates outing for the southpaw, who gave up four earned runs and was tagged with the loss. This will be his fifth career appearance, but only second career start, against the Pirates. He is 0-1 against them with a 6.75 ERA through 6 2/3 total innings.

The rookie Taillon will be facing the Padres for the first time in his career. The 24-year-old made his Major League debut for the Pirates on June 8th and has been a regular member of the rotation ever since. He’s been mostly solid through his first nine starts and he’s coming off one of his better performances. Taillon threw six innings of one-run ball last Friday against the Reds, allowing six hits and giving up one walk while also collecting six strikeouts.
