After dropping the series opener in Pittsburgh, the Padres hope to even things up tonight in game 2 against the Pirates. Edwin Jackson will get the ball for San Diego opposite Ryan Vogelsong.

Jackson, who will make his fifth appearance since joining the Padres (and fifth start overall this season), is coming off a fantastic start last Wednesday against the Brewers. He threw seven shutout innings before allowing three runs in the 8th. All in all he gave up eight hits and issued no walks while striking out five batters. The eight innings constituted his longest outing this season, but he’s had plenty of time to wind down from that performance. He enters tonight’s start on six days of rest thanks to a couple of off days for the Padres between then and now.

Jackson has faced the Bucs 19 times overall (14 times as a starter) in his career. In those appearances, he is 9-3 with a 3.92 ERA.

Vogelsong will be making his second start overall - and first at PNC Park - since suffering a scary injury that threatened his career. The last time the right-hander pitched at PNC Park, he was struck in the face with a fastball, and it’s been a long road to recovery from the injury that he once feared would take his eye and end his MLB career. He returned to the mound last Thursday for the first time since the injury, and he picked up right where he left off. Pitching against the Braves in Atlanta, he threw six solid innings, allowing only one run on three hits and a walk. He also struck out six along the way.

The former Giants pitcher has plenty of past experience pitching against the Padres. In 23 career appearances (12 starts) against San Diego, Vogelsong is 6-6 with a 4.54 ERA.
