Padres Preview: 07/05 Christian Friedrich looks to turn luck around in Arizona

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Padres began their NL West road trip on a high note with an 8-4 win over the Diamondbacks last night. They'll try to clinch the series win this evening, as Christian Friedrich goes up against Zack Godley in game 2.

Tonight will mark Friedrich's 10th start of the season, coming off a few rough outings. Each of his last three starts have seen him give up four or more runs while pitching no more than six innings. But Arizona could give him a good shot at turning things arounf. His best start of the year came against these Diamondbacks, at Chase Field as well. On May 27th he threw seven scoreless innings, keeping the Dbacks to only three hits and a walk while striking out five batters. Overall this season, the left-hander is 4-3 with a 3.96 ERA. He has benefited from some relatively hefty run support from the Padres offense, who have gifted him with five or more runs in seven of his nine starts so far this year. After putting up eight runs in last night's series opener, hopefully they have a lot left in the tank.

Godley will be making just his second start and sixth overall outing of the season tonight. The rookie right-hander did face San Diego twice in the handful of games he appeared in last year. He threw 4 1/3 combined innings in relief and kept the Padres to one run on four hits and a pair of walks. Godley made his 2016 debut with a spot start on June 11th and since then has been used four times out of the bullpen. Altogether he's allowed five runs through 10 1/3 innings of work this season.
