Jose Rondon is having a nice little debut

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at San Diego Padres Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

22-year-old Jose Rondon received his first callup yesterday, and today he got his first MLB start. He’s acquainting himself nicely to The Show so far, making a nice diving stop to start a double play, then he racked up his first career hit! He looks confident and smooth in the field, and the plate doesn’t seem to intimidate him either.

Rondon’s diving stop to start a double play

Rondon’s single up the middle

Rondon came to the Padres along with Taylor Lindsey when Huston Street was traded to the Angels in 2014. Having spent all of 2016 up to this point in Double-A San Antonio, it’s nice to see the kid get a chance to get his feet wet. This callup is expected to be temporary as the Padres needed some infield depth with Yangervis Solarte out on family leave. The shortstop picture for 2017 is entirely uncertain. Could this be a glimpse of what we might see next year?
