So if I understand Padres GM A.J. Preller’s plan, he’s going to trade, the revenant, Melvin Upton Jr. to the Orioles for the struggling Ubaldo Jimenez. This plan will give the Padres a bit of a cost savings over the length of their contracts. I’ll have to go back and check but I think it’s about a $4-5M difference. By doing this the Padres will also clear a spot in the outfield for future star [fingers crossed] Hunter Renfroe to play the second half of the season. Also, since Upton is so much better than Jimenez, Preller will be wanting a top prospect too. If all goes well this turd of a team will be over .500 in 2-5 years.
Earlier in the evening Jeff Passan said the teams were getting close and then Ken Rosenthal rebutted saying they were not close. They’ve been going back and forth each adding details about the progress. My sources have remained quiet.
Meanwhile I’ll try to get back to watching Stranger Things on Netflix.
Sources: Padres are telling teams they're getting close to dealing Melvin Upton Jr. May ultimately be posturing, but that's their tack now.

Sources: #Orioles discussing a trade in which they would acquire #Padres’ Melvin Upton Jr. for Ubaldo Jimenez.

Sources: Upton-for-Jimenez trade between #Orioles and #Padres not yet close. SD also wants prospect.

Jimenez owed balance of $13M in 2016 and $13.5M in ’17. Upton owed balance of $15.45M in ’16 and $16.45M in ’17.

#Padres would save money in Upton-for-Jimenez exchange, money they could redeploy. Also would open spot in OF for Dickerson or Renfroe.

In the proposed deal of Melvin Upton Jr. for Ubaldo Jimenez that @Ken_Rosenthal reported, one would think O's are also sending top prospect.

Jimenez has been a disaster, while Upton has been quite good, and salaries are fairly neutral. By taking back $, Padres get better prospect.
