UPDATE: Inclement weather in St. Louis has postponed game 2 of this series. It’ll be made up tomorrow with a doubleheader. The first game will be at 11:15 am PT and feature this same matchup between Colin Rea and Carlos Martinez. The second game will be at 5:15 pm PT.

The Padres’ winning streak ended on a sour note yesterday with a 10-2 loss in their series opener against the Cardinals. This evening Colin Rea will try to even up the series as he makes his first start of the second half.

It’s been 13 days since Rea has pitched - all part of the Padres’ plan. The 26-year-old threw three light bullpen sessions during his break and he’s itching to get back on the mound. His last outing before the All-Star Break was a rough one for the righty. He gave up four earned runs on eight hits, including a homer, and three walks through 4 2/3 innings.

This will be Rea’s third career appearance against St. Louis. He threw a combined nine innings of work in two starts against them last season, and gave up eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits and four walks.

Opposite Rea will be Carlos Martinez who is looking to secure a second straight win as he takes on the Padres tonight. He’ll also be looking to secure his first career win against San Diego. In five previous outings (two starts) against the Padres, he is 0-1 with a 5.51 ERA through a total of 16 1/3 innings of work.

Martinez has been pitching well for the most part since the end of May, going 4-1 with a 1.49 ERA in his last eight starts. And he could’ve added on a few extra wins to his record if not for some Cardinals bullpen struggles during that stretch.
