The Padres have taken the first two games of the series against the Giants, but today as they go for the sweep they face their toughest challenges: Johnny Cueto and the the Sunday series finale.

Edwin Jackson makes his Padres debut today. It’ll be his first Major League outing since joining the team in June, on a minor league deal. He made eight appearances out of the bullpen for the Marlins earlier this season, posting a 5.91 ERA through 10 2/3 innings. Since signing with the Padres he’s pitched to the tune of a 7.11 ERA in three starts.

Jackson is 2-4 with a 5.59 ERA all-time against the Giants. He’s faced them nine times (eight times as a starter) in his career.

In the Padres’ pursuit of a sweep, Cueto is a huge obstacle to get past. So far San Diego is 0-3 against Cueto just this season. Each time Cueto has pitched against them this year he’s done so in complete game fashion. He kept them to only one run total in those three games, allowing just 13 hits while collecting 25 strikeouts.

But Cueto is coming off a rough outing right here in San Diego. During last week’s All-Star Game at Petco Park, Cueto earned the loss after giving up three runs in his 1 2/3 innings of work for the National League.
