The Swinging Friar of the San Diego Padres is one of the more recognizable and unmistakable mascots in baseball. San Diegans love the big guy, who is always out and about representing the Padres not only at the ballpark, but in the community.
Great Big Story, a video network that prides itself on telling “the untold, the overlooked, and flat-out amazing” stories of the world, recently began a series that highlights mascots. Their “League of Mascots” series, the entirety of which you can watch here includes a video on our own Swingin’ Friar.
“The robe, the sandals, the big goofy grin...” The minute-long video follows our beloved Friar on a typical gameday. He’s shown having fun all around the ballpark, with the Pad Squad, with Petco Park employees, and with the crowd.
With rumblings and rumors that Padres President and CEO Mike Dee would like to replace the Friar as the mascot here in San Diego, it’s always nice to see things like this video that re-enforce people’s love of the Friar and show the regard that he gets even outside of our fanbase.

This is the fourth video in the Great Big Story “League of Mascots” series, which also includes Bernie Brewer from Milwaukee, The Giants’ Lou Seal, and the Phillie Phanatic.
