The Padres wrap up their series against the Rockies tonight and hope to complete the sweep and continue their winning streak.
As announced by Padres manager Andy Green after last night's game, the starter this evening will be rookie right-hander Luis Perdomo, who is making just his second non-relief appearance of the season. In Perfomo's only other start, he pitched two innings and allowed two runs on four hits before giving the ball over to the next relief pitcher in a joint bullpen effort against the Brewers.
We should also expect fellow San Diego reliever Brad Hand to log some innings tonight as well. In 26 appearances this season, he's combined for 29 innings and a 3.10 ERA. This makeshift starting effort is Green's temporary solution to the loss of former Padres ace James Shields, who would have made the start today, but was traded to the White Sox yesterday.
As for the Rockies, it'll be their own rookie righty, Jon Gray, on the hill in the finale. Gray will be making his ninth start of the season, and second at Petco Park. In his first attempt, he was tagged with the loss despite keeping San Diego to two runs on four hits through six frames. He also collected a season-high 11 strikeouts in that outing. Overall this season, he is 3-2 with a 5.76 ERA, though for the most part he has pitched much better on the road than at home.
