Padres Preview: 06/28 Erik Johnson gets another chance against the Orioles

San Diego opens up a two-game set against Baltimore.

MLB: Washington Nationals at San Diego Padres Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

It’s been a rough beginning to Erik Johnson’s Padres career so far. The right-hander has posted a 9.82 ERA through his first three starts, the worst of which was his most recent. He gave up six runs on nine hits through just four innings of work against the Orioles, who also happen to be tonight’s opponent. All of his starts this season have also been multi-homer performances. Johnson has given up a combined seven long balls since joining the team earlier this month, and prior to that he allowed five homers in two starts for the White Sox. He’ll try to turn things around tonight, but it’ll be a tough one. The Orioles, who are in San Diego for a two-game set that opens tonight, have hit an MLB-leading 48 home runs (including two against Johnson last Wednesday) this month while batting a collective .298.

Baltimore hopes to continue their hot hitting and get their starter some nice run support. Ubaldo Jimenez gets the ball for the O’s in the series opener, and he’ll be looking to improve on a 4-7 record and 6.97 ERA on the season. His last outing, against the Padres, was one of his best in the last two months. He allowed two earned runs on four hits, and struck out seven batters, en route to a winning decision.
