Welcome back to Camden Yards, Padres. The San Diego crew coaxed the Orioles into a false-sense of security and eventually topped them for their first of the series in Baltimore. No help came from Luis Perdomo, but a weak O's bullpen ended up falling against a strong Pads bullpen, with a few actionable bats behind them.
Perdomo, who isn't quite filling in as a fill-in, was allowed to pitch for 5 innings. In that, he gave up 7 hits, 6 earned runs, 2 walks, and 2 home runs. He struck out 8, but by the 5th inning the Orioles were leading 6-3. Not a good start, but not quite lost. Kevin Quackenbush, Brad Hand, and Ryan Buchter shut the O's out for 3 innings. Within those three, the Pads scored their go-ahead run, and by the time Fernando Rodney closed things out (actually allowing a run) the O's were in the Friars' dust.
Matt Kemp had himself a night, with 4 hits in 6 at-bats. He scored 2 of the Pads' runs, with two choice RBI singles. Yangervis Solarte, Melvin Upton Jr. Christian Bethancourt, and Alexei Ramirez all had multi-hit nights as well.
Wil Myers, Travis Jankowski, Ramirez, and Solarte all got some runs home tonight. Upton Jr. scored on a wild pitch, and Derek Norris stayed patient at the plate for a run-walked-in. Oh, he also popped off a solo shot that arced itself all the way into the stands. Hyun-soo Kim tried following it, but the ball beat him over the wall as the wall beat Kim.
All that scoring put the Padres up over the Orioles 10-7 in the 9th. Despite a rare run allowed by Rodney, there was not much done to prevent the Pads from picking up their first W on the road in Camden. Win numero dos will hopefully come tomorrow, as Erik Johnson and Ubaldo Jimenez will decide who the least-worse starter between the each other is.
