The Padres opened up their homestand with a bang last night as they defeated the hated Mariners by a score of 14-6. They'll try to close out the series with a two-game sweep at Petco Park, second Colin Rea to the mound tonight opposite Wade Miley.
Rea is coming off a very short stint in the minors, having being sent down on May 23rd to help manage his innings. He pitched one inning (and allowed one earned run) for the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas. Prior to that he had made nine starts (and one relief appearance) for the big league club, posting a 4.47 ERA while going 3-2 in that stretch. This will be Rea's first career outing against the Mariners.
Miley is 4-2 with a 4.95 ERA through his first ten starts of the season. He's coming off one of his worst performances of the year. He gave up five earned runs on six hits, including three home runs, while throwing four-plus frames against the Twins. He has plenty of experience pitching against San Diego, but not much success. In 12 career starts against the Friars, he is just 1-6 with a 4.60 ERA and 1.410 WHIP.
