The Padres have already ruled out any possibility of a series win after condeding the first two of this four-game set against the Nationals. Tonight they'll try to keep hope alive for a split as they take on their visiting team for game 3 at Petco Park.
It's been more than six weeks since Colin Rea notched a win. In that stretch, he's thrown 30 innings and allowed 27 runs (24 earned) to raise his ERA from 3.82 to 5.37 on the season. His last start was his worst of the year. He only lasted 2 2/3 innings and gave up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits, including a home run.
Opposing pitcher Max Scherzer, on the other hand has been fantastic lately. He's pitched seven or more frames in each of his last five starts, going 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA in that span to improve on an already solid second season with the Nationals. This will be Scherzer's seventh career start against the Padres. In his previous six he went 2-2 with a 2.75 ERA.
