The Padres will face old friend Joe Ross in tonight’s contest against the Nationals, marking the second of a four-game set. In turn, they’ll counter with Christian Friedrich, who will make his seventh start for San Diego.

Friedrich will be looking to improve on an already impressive 2.12 ERA and 3-1 record as a Friar so far. He’s coming off one of the better of his six starts this season. He went six innings against the Rockies at Coors Field and only allowed one run (unearned) on two hits and three walks while striking out nine batters.

Ross, in his second year with the Nationals after being traded from the Padres at the end of 2014, is making his second career start against his former organization. Last year in D.C., he threw six innings of one-run ball, allowing only one hit and two walks, and collecting seven strikeouts along the way. His 2016 season was off to an incredible start - a 3-0 record and 0.79 ERA in the month of April - but he’s come back down to Earth a bit since then. He comes into tonight’s matchup with a 5-4 record and 3.01 ERA on the season. His most recent outing saw him go seven innings and giving up three earned runs while striking out eight.
