After salvaging a win yesterday to avoid a sweep by the Marlins, the Padres kick off their weekend four-game series tonight against the Nationals. Erik Johnson faces off against Tanner Roark in the opener this evening as the Padres try to string together a couple of wins in a row to get a streak started.
Johnson will try to turn things around after his last outing, which marked his Padres debut. The right-hander pitched short of five innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits (including two home runs) - a performance many deemed similar to one from James Shields, who was traded to the White Sox for Johnson less than two weeks ago.
On the contrary, Roark is coming off one of his best performances of the season. He threw seven scoreless frames against Philadelphia last Saturday, racking up seven strikeouts while keeping the Phillies to six hits and a walk. However, that came just six days after his worst 2016 start. He lasted only three innings against the Reds on June 5th, allowing five earned runs on seven hits.
