Padres Preview: 06/12 Two Rockies first-round picks will battle in rubber match at Coors Field

Yesterday the Padres couldn’t repeat their late-inning comeback from Friday, and they fell in game 2 to the Rockies at Coors Fields. Today’s rubber match will determine the victor of the series, and hopefully it’ll result in the Padres’ second series win in a row.

Christian Friedrich will try to be the one to lead the Friars to that victory as he makes his sixth start of the season. The former Rockie, who was drafted in the first round (25th overall) by Colorado in 2008, will be facing his old team for the first time since they released him in February. The Padres signed him to a minor league deal in March and he pitched two games in single-A Lake Elsinore and two games in triple-A El Paso before being called up to the big league club in May.

Aside from one shaky start, Friedrich has been a solid addition to the rotation since he joined it in May. And unlike many Padres pitchers, he has been rewarded for it so far, going 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA in his first five starts. He’s only had one outing in which he received no run support, and he’s received seven runs or more in each of his other four.

Friedrich will pitch opposite another Rockies first-rounder in today’s series finale. The left-handed Tyler Anderson, drafted 20th overall by the Rockies in 2011, will make the start for Colorado - also his Major League debut - after being promoted from triple-A Albuquerque in place of the injured Jake McGee. Prior to this call-up he made six starts across three levels in the minors, compiling an overall 2-2 record, 2.35 ERA, and 1.17 WHIP.
