The Padres could clinch their third straight series win tonight in game 3 of 4 against the visiting Mets. After a couple of really encouraging performances in a row, the team looks to keep the momentum on their side as they send James Shields to the mound.
The veteran right-hander is coming off his first win of the season and looking to make it two in a row. His last time out he kept the Rockies to just one run despite nine hits in six innings of work. This evening's matchup will be his fourth career start against the Mets. In his previous four, he went 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA and 0.857 WHIP.
Before finally notching a winning decision in his last start, Shields went 0-4 with a 3.55 ERA in his first five games of the year. But he hasn't gotten much in the way of run support this season. The Padres scored two runs or fewer in all but one of his starts.
Tonight Padres hitters will have to deal with Bartolo Colon, a pitcher with whom most of them are relatively unfamiliar with. Despite a 19-year big league career, Colon has only faced the Padres six times. And of the current crop of San Diego players, only seven have any experience against the 42-year-old.
Colon is coming off his best start of the year so far. He threw eight shutout innings against the Braves on Monday for his second win of the year.
