Following their series loss in Arizona against the Diamondbacks, the Padres continue their road trip with a quick two-game swing through Mariners land before coming back home to San Diego. The opener of this four-game series against Seattle (with two games at Safeco and two games at Petco) will see righties Andrew Cashner and Nathan Karns square off on the mound.
Five days ago Cashner made his return from the disabled list with a strained right hamstring, and he picked up about right where he left off. The 29-year-old made was strolling right along through his first five innings and then ran into a little trouble in the 6th. All in all, he allowed three runs on four hits and four walks through six frames. But it took him only 82 pitches - a season low - to get through those six innings of work.
Cashner is still seeking his first career win against Seattle as he goes into his fourth career outing against them. In his first three attempts (two starts and a relief appearance) he is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA.
Karns, on the other hand, is making his first appearance against San Diego today. The right-hander, pitching in his fourth Major League season, has been a decent addition to the Mariners rotation this year, going 4-1 with a 3.53 ERA through his first nine starts. Much of his success is due in large part to the Mariners offense. In six of his nine outings this year he's received six or more runs of support.
