The Padres opened up the series and the homestand with a nice win yesterday, and today they'll try to clinch the series behind Andrew Cashner.

Cashner's last time out was his worst start of the season, but he wasn't entirely to blame. Of the six runs with which he was credited (along with four hits and four walks), only three were earned. But the right-hander was taken out after just 2 2/3 innings. Prior to that outing (which manager Andy Green called an "aberration") he had a couple of really solid performances in a row, going six innings and allowing one run each time. He goes into tonight's matchup with a 1-2 record and 4.94 ERA on the season.

Cashner doesn't have the best track record against the Rockies, but he'll try to turn tings around tonight in his 12th career appearance against them. In his first 11 (six of which were starts), he is 1-3 with a 6.08 ERA and 1.725 WHIP.

Going opposite Cashner tonight will be 25-year-old Eddie Butler. The righty has faced the Padres only once in his young career. In 2015 he took a loss against them after allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and only lasting four innings on the mound. Tonight will be Butler's second appearance and first start of the season after being called up from Triple-A Albuquerque six days ago. He made a relief appearance on his first day back with the big league club, giving up one run in 2 1/3 innings of work.
