Today marks the fourth anniversary of the Padres' acquisition of Alexi Amarista from the Angels in a trade that sent reliever Ernesto Frieri slightly north. In those 1,461 days the Padres have underwent so much personnel turnover that only one player on the 40-man roster, starting pitcher Andrew Cashner, made his Padres debut earlier - and just barely, at that. Only seven others - pitchers Leonel Campos, Tayron Guerrero, Kevin Quackenbush, Colin Rea, and Robbie Erlin, catcher Austin Hedges, and second baseman Cory Spangenberg - have been with the organization longer, although they made it to the big club much later.
GLB coverage from back then
The Padres were dealing from a position of strength - Remember when the Padres' bullpen was a strength? - and got the major league-ready Amarista and low minors starter Donn Roach. Frieri stepped in as the Angels' closer almost immediately, and put together 1.4 bWAR that season alone, which is almost as much as the Padres got out of Amarista and Roach altogether. Amarista has been barely above replacement level, accruing 1.8 bWAR, while Roach registered -0.2 bWAR in his 16 games with the 2014 Padres.
