After yet another loss to the Giants, the Padres will look to seize their best opportunity for a win against a familiar face in Jake Peavy, former Padre and now Giants pitcher.
To say that Jake Peavy is not doing well is an understatement. Even though both James Shields (2-6) and Jake Peavy (1-5) have very similar records this season, Peavey's ERA (8.21) is much more telling of his performance as of late. His ERA over his last five starts (9.58) is even worse, and he has allowed at least five runs in four of those games. He was shelled for 5 runs by the Cubs in his last start and only lasted an inning and change.
Shields is more of a tough luck loser, having lost to the Giants twice already despite strong showings against them. He only allowed 3 runs and struck out 7 in his last start against San Francisco last Thursday but was only backed up by one run in a 3-1 defeat. The Padres have only averaged 1.99 runs in support of Shields, making him the only pitcher in the majors below a 2 run average among pitchers who qualify.
Even though Peavy is struggling, the current Padres roster has only batted .159 against him, with only Jon Jay and Melvin, Upton, Jr., batting over .250. The time to win a game against San Francisco is nigh since the Padres have had to consistently face either Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto or Jeff Samardzija.
Buckle up for a battle in the bay at 12:45 Left Coast Time. Here's hoping the Padres can scrape up a win against an old struggling friend.
