After a long, difficult April, James Shields no longer has a goose egg in his W column. He still didn't get much run support tonight, but a two spot in the first inning gave him all he needed. A sharp defense and a lockdown bullpen cemented the win to open the series.
The top of the lineup started the night in brilliant fashion. Jon Jay and Wil Myers singled back to back. Matt Kemp got his mojo working and followed up with a two-RBI double. Rockies starter Jon Gray shut them down for the next five innings, but it was too late for him. Former Friar Nick Hundley drove in the sole Colorado run in the fourth. With two outs and a runner on third, he drove a double between Jay and Kemp.
But that wasn't enough. The Padres defense turned three double plays, and Ryan Buchter, Brandon Maurer, and Fernando Rodney combined for three hitless innings to wrap up the evening.
Andrew Cashner takes the mound tomorrow looking for a series win. First pitch is at 7:10 PM.
