We're still riding the high from the Padres' doubleheader sweep and series win over the MLB-leading Cubs, but the team is preparing for their next challenge. Tonight they begin a four-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers, who haven't been the toughest team to beat but have had about the same amount of success as the Padres this season.
James Shields will get the ball for tonight's series opener, hoping to improve on a 1-5 record and 3.60 ERA on the season. In his most recent start, he went six innings and allowed four earned runs, tying a season high. Tonight's game will be his first ever appearance against the Brewers
Pitching opposite Shields will be Jimmy Nelson, who is 3-2 with a 3.74 ERA. The 26-year-old right-hander is coming off his worst outing of the season. He threw five innings and gave up six runs (five earned). In two career starts against San Diego, Nelson is 1-1. He allowed a combined five runs through 11 2/5 starts in those two games, but only two of those runs were earned.
