A rainy Chicago evening gave the Padres and Cubs an unexpected off day yesterday as their series opener was postponed. That game will hopefully be played on Wednesday morning as the first part of a split doubleheader. Tonight hopefully the rain can cease for just long enough to get some baseball in at Wrigley Field.
Cesar Vargas, yesterday's supposed starter, will get the ball tonight instead (assuming the game is played) to try to improve on some already strong numbers this season. The young righty, who made his Major League debut on April 23rd of this year, has posted a 1.10 ERA in his three appearances so far this season. That's only two runs allowed through 16 1/3 innings of work. But Vargas still doesn't have a Major League win under his belt.
The Cubs will try to keep it that way as they go for their eighth consecutive win tonight. Jon Lester, who was also originally slated to kick off the series last night, will make the start for Chicago and try to improve on his impressive start to the season. Through his first six starts, he's gone 3-1 with a 1.57 ERA, though he's still looking for his first home win of the year. This will be Lester's third career outing against San Diego. He went 0-1 while giving up a combined four earned runs on 12 hits in his previous two tries.
