When the Padres and Dodgers wrap up their first series of the 2016 season tonight, the Padres won't just be looking for their first win. They'll be looking for their first run of the year after suffering back-to-back shutouts against L.A., who outscored them 18-0 in the first two games of the season.

A lack of offensive support unfortunately isn't anything new to this evening's starter, Andrew Cashner, but hopefully tonight will be a nice change of pace for the right-hander. Last season Cashner posted a 4.34 ERA - not great, but not terrible and definitely not deserving of the 6-16 record he accumulated through his 31 starts. Cashner came out on the losing end of several well-pitched games due to a lack of run support, as well as some shaky defense at times. And neither of those factors have looked any better in the first two games of the series.

The gap between his pitching and the rest of the team's ability to back him up with offensive and defensive support seems even bigger when you look at his career numbers against the Dodgers. In 21 career games (10 starts) against L.A. Cashner has pitched to the tune of a 2.10 ERA while earning only one win and being credited with five losses. In four starts against the Dodgers in 2015, his teammates allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate while providing one run of support or fewer in three of those games.

The offense of 2016 so far has been nothing to be proud of. Six hits and no runs through 18 innings is concerning. Tonight they'll try to turn things around against a rookie pitcher, Kenta Maeda, who is making his MLB debut tonight. The Japanese star made six starts for the Dodgers this Spring, posting a 2.35 ERA.
