Coming off yesterday's off day, the Padres hit the road again to face NL West rivals, the Dodgers, and try to get a bit of redemption against the team who crushed them in their season opener.
The Padres came out on the losing end of three straight shutouts in their 2016 Opening Series against the Dodgers at Petco Park. L.A. outscored them 25-0 over the course of that three-game set, and overall have won the last nine matchups between them dating back to 2015.
Tonight the Padres will introduce a new player to their rivalry with the Dodgers. They'll send Cesar Vargas to the mound for his second appearance of the season (and of his Major League career). Vargas debuted last Saturday and kept the Cardinals to one run through five innings of work. Prior to that outing, he made two starts for the Double-A San Antonio Missions, posting a 1.42 ERA and 0.474 WHIP through 12 2/3 innings.
Tonight's Dodgers starter, Alex Wood, is coming off consecutive shaky outings and will be looking to rebound tonight against the Friars. The lefty, in his second year with the Dodgers, has given up five or more runs in three out of his four starts this season. Over his last two games he's given up 13 runs (11 earned) through a combined nine innings.
