The Padres notched the series win but couldn't complete the sweep against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates, dropping last night's series finale by a score of 11-1. Tonight they'll try to get back in the win column as they continue their homestand and welcome the St. Louis Cardinals to Petco Park for the first of a three-game series.
Andrew Cashner makes the start for San Diego in the series opener. It'll be his 9th career outing, but only 3rd career start against St. Louis. His record in those previous eight appearances is 1-1, with a 1.86 ERA through 19 1/3 combined innings.
Cashner's most recent start was his most successful of the season so far. He went six innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks, allowing only one run on four hits and two walks and striking out five batters. Prior to that he had racked up an 8.00 ERA through nine total innings of work in his first two starts of the year.
Adam Wainwright, who will get the ball for the Cards tonight, has struggled even more than Cashner. The right-hander is 0-2 with an 8.27 ERA after three games this season. His best start was his first, when he threw six innings and allowed three runs. Since then he's combined for 10 1/3 innings and allowed 13 runs on 16 hits.
But Wainwright has had a lot of success against the Padres in his career. In 11 appearances (eight starts) against San Diego, he's gone 6-2 with a 1.74 ERA.
