Coming off of yesterday's homer-filled win, the Padres will send Drew Pomeranz to the mound against another left-handed pitcher in Pittsburgh's Jeff Locke.
Interestingly enough, Pomeranz (1-1, 3.27 ERA) will be the first left-handed pitcher the Pirates have faced this season. He lost his last outing against the Phillies despite a solid performance in only allowing two runs in 6 innings. He'll look to continue his solid pitching in his first time facing the Pirates.
Locke (0-1, 2.53 ERA) lost his last game against the Brewers, giving up three runs over 4 2/3 innings. The Padres hold the advantage over Locke as he has lost both his career starts against San Diego with a 10.00 ERA. Locke gave up seven runs in four innings last year in Petco Park.
We may possibly see Christian Bethancourt in the lineup today since he has enjoyed success against the left-handed Locke (.500 AVG against). Matt Kemp could also do some damage, batting .571 when facing Locke. Forget career matchups, Norris gets the start today.
Worth noting are some injuries for the Padres in last night's contest: Cory Spangenberg strained his left quad during a run to first base and may not see action tonight. Alexi Amarista also appeared to be slowed up by a hamstring pull. The Padres infield depth is already thin, so look for some interesting roster construction from Andy Green tonight.
Let's hope the Padres bats stay hot as they look to take a much-needed series win at home tonight at 7:10 PM. It wouldn't hurt to indulge in a late-night coffee as last night's game carried well into the late evening.
