Padres Preview: 04/16 Friars still looking for first home win of 2016

The Padres look to even up the series behind Andrew Cashner and notch their first win at Petco Park this season.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Padres finally scored some runs at home last night, but came out on the losing end of a close game in their series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tonight they'll send Andrew Cashner to the mound to try to notch his first win, and the team's first home win, of the season.

Cashner's 2016 Petco Park debut wasn't pretty. He only lasted four innings against the Dodgers, throwing 94 pitches and giving up five runs (all earned) on six hits. He did a little better in Philadelphia, where he went five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits for a no-decision.

He has plenty of experience against the Diamondbacks in his career. He's started against them 13 times - more than any other team - and faced them four more times in relief. Overall, he's 5-5 with a 3.26 ERA in those 17 appearances.

Pitching opposite Cashner will be Shelby Miller, who was acquired this past offseason in a trade with the Atlanta Braves. Miller is coming off an All Star season in which he faced the Padres once, keeping them to one run on five hits through seven innings but not factoring into the decision. Career-wise, he is 1-1 with a 3.90 ERA in five games (four starts) against San Diego.

Miller's first two starts as a Dback haven't been ideal. So far the right-hander is 0-1 after allowing a combined ten runs through 11 innings of work in 2016. Hopefully he continue that trend at Petco Park this evening.

The game gets underway at 5:40 pm PT.
