Andrew Cashner wasn't at his best in his 2016 debut last Wednesday. Today he'll try to rebound from his rough start and kick off the Padres' series in Philadelphia on a high note.

Cashner gave up five runs on six hits and two walks, lasting only four innings in Wednesday's series finale against the Dodgers. The right-hander is coming off a disappointing 2015 season, his statistical worst as a starting pitcher. He went 6-16 in 31 games last year, posting a 4.34 ERA. That includes a loss to the Phillies last August. Cashner went 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits, including a home run.

While Cashner tries to redeem himself today, Phillies starter Aaron Nola hopes for a repeat of his season debut last week. Nola, who is making his first ever "Opening Day" start during the Phillies' home opener today, was fantastic in his first outing of the year. The sophomore pitcher threw seven innings of one-run ball against the Reds last Wednesday, allowing only four hits and no walks while striking out eight men, though he didn't get the decision as the Phillies came out on the losing end of that game.

The young right-hander made his Major League debut on July 21st of last year and went 6-2 with a 3.59 ERA in 13 starts through the end of the season. One of those starts was against San Diego, and it was one of the better performances of his season. He pitched seven innings and kept the Friars to one run on two hits and two walks, collecting six strikeouts along the way.

After the Padres' disastrous, if historic, opening series against the Dodgers, the offense came back with a vengeance in Colorado, though they couldn't complete the sweep against the Rockies. Hopefully the offense can continue to try to redeem itself this series in Philadelphia.

It's an early start today, with Cashner's first pitch scheduled for 12:05 pm PT.
