The Padres will try to make it a sweep today as they conclude their three-game series in Colorado. There will be some lineup changes today, with both Tyson Ross and Yangervis Solarte hitting the DL early this season.
Ross, who was scheduled to start today for San Diego, was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to April 5th, due to shoulder inflammation. Then this morning we heard the official word that third baseman Solarte on the 15-day DL with a strained right hamstring, an injury he sustained during last night's rout of the Rockies.
In Ross' place will be James Shields, the Opening Day starter of 2015 and self-proclaimed clubhouse leader. Thanks to an off day on Thursday, Shields will be working on the regular five days of rest. In his season debut on Tuesday, the veteran right-hander pitched mostly well in his six innings of work, except for a troublesome 4th inning in which he gave up three runs. Throughout his career, Shields has pitched eight times against the Rockies, going 6-1 with a 4.69 ERA.
On the mound for Colorado will be Chad Bettis, who is looking to rebound from his 2016 debut. He gave up five runs through 5 1/3 innings against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field last week. In six career appearances (three starts) against the Padres, Bettis is 1-0 with a 2.04 ERA.
The series finale gets underway at 1:10 pm PT.
