After several days of weak batting, the Padres hitters returned to form with a bang. Well, two bangs, actually. Jabari Blash and Alexei Ramirez both went yard on Pierce Johnson in the sixth inning. That was just a fraction of what the Friar bats produced, as the offense put together ten runs in their domination of the Cubs.
While the sixth inning fireworks left the most indelible image of the day, the real notable work came in the first four innings. That was when the team took on reigning National League Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta. The ace struck out five Friars, but they still clawed out a run on two hits and two walks. San Diego starter Colin Rea looked pretty good across the same span, giving up a lone run on one hit and three walks.
Outside of that, the game was pretty much a run parade for the good guys. There were three other extra base hits, doubles from Jon Jay, Jose Pirela, and Manuel Margot, whose excellent spring continues to impress onlookers.
