Padres will talk extension with Wil Myers’ agent

The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Dennis Lin is bringing us news from the GM Meetings which I believe are in Glendale, Arizona. Word is that Padres GM A.J. Preller is planning to talk to 1B Wil Myers’s agent about an extension.

Back in July, after his All-Star appearance, at the height of his season performance there was talk of an extension to sign Myers before he reaches free-agency in 2019. Myers said he had interest in staying in San Diego based mostly on Preller’s plan, his manager Andy Green and not the burritos.

"I love being here," Myers said Friday afternoon inside Petco's home clubhouse. "I do really, truly believe that (General Manager) A.J. Preller has a plan for the future, and that's a big deal when it comes to extension talks. I love everything about (Manager) Andy Green, what he's done here. I think he's going to be a great manager. As far as being here long-term, I could see myself doing it. I could see trying to build something here."

There’s still time to make the deal but Preller seems eager to get something done before Myers finds a better burrito deal.

"You always want to hear players that want to be in your franchise, that want to be in your city, and I think that's exciting to hear," Preller said. "He's a big-time talent and, I think, is excited by this franchise, this place, and wants to be here. When we made the trade, that's what we were looking for.

With any luck Myers will be in brown and gold for years to come.
