The Padres close out their 2016 season at Chase Field this afternoon. In the finale of their three-game set against the Diamondbacks, the Friars will try to avoid the sweep and end their season on a winning note.

On the hill will be Paul Clemens, who's been on a bit of a hot steak lately. Over his last three starts he's gone 2-0, keeping opponents to a combined three runs (two of which were unearned) on nine hits and two walks. Included in that stretch is a 5 2/3-inning appearance against Arizona, against whom both of those unearned runs were scored. He kept them to three hits and a walk while striking out four, but he ended up with a no-decision. He also had a five-inning start against them in August (three earned runs, eight hits, three walks, five innings of work) and threw an inning in relief against them back in July at Chase Field, where he allowed one run on one hit and no walks. The right-hander, working on just four days’ rest, will try to end his first season with the Padres with a strong outing.

The Dbacks, meanwhile, will turn to rookie Matt Koch in the season finale. The September call-up, who made his Major League debut on September 9th, is making just his second start. His last time out was his first start, a solid outing where he threw five innings of two-run ball, allowing only one hit and one walk to the Nationals.
