The Padres pulled off an exciting walk-off win last night to even up the series against the Rockies. Tonight they'll try to go ahead in the third game of four against Colorado, sending their ace to the mound to accomplish that.
James Shields struggled to keep the ball in the strike zone in his latest outing, issuing a career-high six walks to the Dodgers in five innings of work. His 29 appearances this season so far include three games against the Rockies, two of which resulted in wins and the third ending in a no-decision for Shields. Altogether, Shields is 4-1 with a 4.33 ERA in six career starts against Colorado.
Rockies starter Chris Rusin has only faced the Padres twice in his career, but both times he was dominant against San Diego hitters. Just last month, Rusin pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only five hits and a walk at the normally hitter-friendly Coors Field. Prior to that, the last time he had pitched against the Friars was in 2013 as a member of the Cubs, and he shut them out that time too, keeping them to only three hits and four walks, though he only lasted 6 1/3 innings.
